Press Release

From thinking together to working together. Tamás used a computer program to draw up the plans for the parts and we had a lathe operator make the test pieces. I practiced a lot to try out the innovations and spent many hours using the tuning machine. The years of joint work resulted in an invention, which was published by the National Intellectual Property Office on 28 April 2017 under the title „Reform flute head”...

They said about us

“I heartily recommend it to everyone!”

Since I've been playing with the Reform tuner plug, I honestly find it hard not to practice. For me, this invention has made a huge difference and my only regret is that I didn't invest in it years ago. I feel that my "voice" is finally really coming out of my flute, it's a completely different experience to practice or play solo/chamber in concert. As I have recently got braces, it is particularly helpful to be able to sound bright, supple, colourful or even full/saturated. Overall, I feel more motivated and confident as an artist. For me, trying the zirconium-silver combination with a 14 carat gold diaphragm has brought a twist to my all-silver master instrument. For anyone who also plays this instrument with heart and soul, but wants something extra (or even a better instrument), this could be an excellent option, as it really does sound like moving up a category or two. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and use this instrument. I heartily recommend it to everyone!

“Dear flutists!”

I think we all agree that the voice is a mirror of our individuality. Everyone's ideal voice is different, and it is decided in the head. In our heads, and of course in the head of the flute! That's why Zoltán Lakat's innovation is so great, because it's also in the head. I've been using this wonderful invention for almost a year now, and it has given me many pleasant surprises! First of all, all three octaves sound better thanks to the rich overtones. The lower register is also easy to start in and has a bigger sound, while maintaining a beautiful tone. The piano starts of the third octave are also much easier, plus there's no uncertainty of arrival in the big leaps. The orchestral tuning also benefits from a richness of overtones, and the always high C# has found its place. I liked the H model of the bronze tuning plug with silver crown plug and gold diaphragm the best, I use that one.

“I highly recommend it to everyone!”

The "Reform" tuning plug made audible changes from the first time I tried it; a fuller, more rich tone and a stronger low register. In addition to the change, it provides a feel in which I can use more extreme dynamics.
I highly recommend it to everyone!

“gives my instrument a more noble, subtle tone”

I have a 25-year-old Muramatzu pure silver flute with a C-foot, "tuned" with a 14 carat, 19 gram gold tuning plug.
It makes it easier for me to realize my musical ideas and gives my instrument a more noble, subtle tone.
Compared to the original tuning plug, it has a softer, more refined sound.

“How easy it is to play the flute”

Reform tuning pegs give flutists lots of help and a beautiful sound. Because they amplify all the good qualities of the Boehm flute that are useful and a prerequisite for beautiful flute playing, they also make technique very easy, so you can pay much more attention to the music itself. You can choose the right plug for each style and enjoy how easy it is to play the flute.

Boglárka Erdei, flute student

“Not much attention should be paid to intonation while playing”

With the Reform tuning stopper, I was able to experience a side of flute playing that I couldn't with the traditional stopper. It made my tone bright and silky. It absolutely expands my sound in all directions, both in the lower and upper register. It makes the tone start easy, even on the low b's it is easy to use a quick staccato. When playing, you don't have to pay as much attention to intonation as you would with a traditional cork. For me, as a flutist with braces, it has helped a lot to mask the fluffiness in my voice caused by the braces. I have a much broader "palette" and a more colourful vocal range. I highly recommend Reform tuner plugs to anyone who wants to play more freely.

Klarissza Iváncsik, Budapest, student of the Liszt Academy

“The desired sound experience is easier to achieve”

I was introduced to the reform flute plug in 2018. Initially I was sceptical, as I imagine many others were. From the first try I heard that it makes a significant positive change in the timbre and dynamics of the instrument. It also makes it easier to start playing and especially the lower register. I thought a lot about which one to choose.I liked several plugs and finally decided on the brass titanium. Unfortunately, you still have to practice, but the desired sound experience is easier to achieve. Another big advantage is that the variation of materials is "infinite"! I wish everyone to find the right one!

Gabriella Codeluppi-Szabó, flutist, Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra

“Very inspiring for me”

In May 2019, I had a Reform flute stopper, a combination of 14 karat gold and zirconium, and a silver crown stopper with a 14 karat gold membrane installed in my Pearl flute. My flute's sound has become fuller and its dynamic spectrum has broadened. For my orchestral work, a colourful dynamic performance is essential, and with this improvement I can achieve this much more easily: the pianos are quieter and the fortepianos can be even louder without changing the fullness or colour of the sound. The intonation has also become more stable, especially in the piano. The plug also makes it easier to start the note, and articulation on low notes is also very easy. The timbre is evened out, with a more consistent sound in all octaves. It was very inspiring for me to discover new possibilities in my instrument that I can easily implement. I recommend the Reform flute plug to anyone looking for new possibilities in their instrument. Everyone's individual needs are fulfilled by the manufacturers in Pécs, as the variety of materials and shapes means that all expectations can be met.

Ivett Nepp, Flutist of the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra-Pécs, teacher at the Liszt Ferenc Music School in Pécs

“It's a pleasure to play!”

For my Muramatsu instrument, I chose a silver tuning plug, silver crown plug with gold membrane. Compared to the factory plug there is a big difference! The sound is much smoother, the lower registers are easier to play and the dynamic range is wider. The intonation of the instrument is more pronounced and easier to correct. It is a joy to play!

Dominika Ács, flutist

“Flutes tuned this way fit better”

With Reform tuning plugs, factory flutes can be customised to an unprecedented degree. Similarly to how clarinets and trumpets can be tuned using flutes of different sizes. Flutes tuned in this way are better suited to the flutists' skills and needs.

Tamás Dörmösi, chamber musician

“Silver-zirconium tuning plug”

I've been using a silver-zirconium tuning plug since February 2019.When I first tried it, I immediately felt that it was easier to start the notes and manage the tone ends, even when I had less air. The lower notes sound more powerful and easier. Overall, the registers are smoother, brighter sounding, even to outsiders. I have felt these virtues ever since. I enjoy being able to play more freely with less energy investment, without effort. I think it's worth trying different "plug variations" to see which is best for you. I'm glad I found out about this option, thank you!

Imola Molnár

“I would warmly recommend it to anyone”

I was afraid to invest in my little ebony tuning plug, but since I got it, I am happy to see every day how much help it provides. I can tell and outside listeners have noticed a change in my tone. I have noticed a brighter voice and a greater openness. It's not a substitute for practice, but it does make it easier to manage certain basics, such as starting a note, whatever the octave. It improves any intonation problems. It makes it easier to play in the third octave. And I could go on. Overall, it gives you a more pleasant feeling when playing. I would warmly recommend it to anyone.

Amdegha Lilia

“The instrument vibrates better”

I bought a silver Reform tuner and crown plug for my silver-headed Muramatsu flute. I was about to change the sound, but this plug added more to the quality of the instrument than when I was playing on an all-silver instrument. With the new tuner plug, my flute sound became softer, had more space, and became less sharp. I feel I can shape the notes much more easily. The instrument vibrates better and I can hear my own playing better. The sound is more expansive. It is easier to intonate and to start softly in the high registers.

Dorottya Takács, Student at the Academy of Music

“It was like buying a new instrument”

Thanks to the detailed instructions, it took me less than two minutes to replace the tuning plug and the crown plug on the flute head. I have always felt that when I try to play louder, the flute doesn't get enough air, it's like I'm blowing under the notes. This has completely disappeared! Everything is simpler now, and the lower register has a wonderful, rich tone. The sound of the flute is more beautiful, richer. I can only recommend it to everyone. Thanks for everything and congratulations on a great invention!

Iulia Cristina Raducan

“I was immediately convinced”

I chose a bronze tuning slide for my Sankyo instrument, which made the intonation of the instrument even more stable. It also gave a noble shine to the whole range of the instrument, which convinced me immediately. The low register sounded noticeably fuller, while the previous harsh colour became brilliant. The sound is not dry when playing double tongues, but gloomy. I chose a thick silver diaphragm for the zirconium crown plug, so this triple combination helps to create a universal sound that makes my playing more colourful, in playing a romantic or 20th century piece, while also giving the 18th century repertoire a more articulate and intimate sound.

Zoltán Stuber, flute teacher

“The multiphonics, the marginal notes are much easier to play”

For months now I have been playing everything from Bach to modern pieces requiring extended techniques on the cocobolo tuning slide. From low B to four-line F, the range of timbres and dynamics of every note has expanded, there are virtually more possibilities, and it's up to the performer to explore and use them consciously. There are considerably fewer intonation problems due to the flute's construction, and faster tone initiation, which is very advantageous for staccato movements. Multiphonics and fretted notes are much easier to sound, and frullato in the low register is also less of a problem. I get the feeling of a wider room for everything, with "enough space" for the notes, more overtones, a fuller sound. If I put the traditional plug back in, it's as if some of the timbre has been artificially cut.

Kristóf Siklósi, Music Academy student

“It sounds with playful ease”

I bought a zirconium tuning plug for my Sankyo silver flute, a silver crown plug with an 18-carat gold membrane. During my practice, I have found that my instrument has a much nicer, bigger sound, and it sounds with ease, which previously required a lot of work and time! Thank you!!!! The Reform tuning plug has also worked great for my alto flute. I have a Trevor J. James Master-type alto flute with a silver crown and silver tuning plug. The most noticeable change is that the sound of the alto flute is much rounder and less metallic in the second and third octaves, and much fuller and lighter in the lower register. The breath control is also less fatiguing than usual.

Tímea Fábián, DLA flutist, teacher

“A much higher class instrument”

I have been using one of the Reform tuning and crown plugs for almost 3 months. With these changes, a much higher class instrument has been born. It makes everyday flute playing significantly easier, for me it gives me a sense of security to achieve extreme dynamics. There is a lightness of touch in all areas, the gimmicks are eliminated, the timbre is wonderful. Better still it's customisable and everyone can find their own Reform tuning plug.

Anna Bálint, PTE-MK Music Institute student

“Requires less energy”

The Reform tuning plug, in my experience, makes it easier to tune the instrument for prolonged practice and performances. It takes less energy to maintain volume in the forte range, and it is softer to start pianos in the upper 3 line position. Previously I only had difficulty with the 1 line d-c sometimes, with the tone quality of the fortissimo start. Now these have disappeared. Overall, with less power it is less tiring to play quality notes at high sustained volume - e.g. in wind band playing - It is very nice to blow pianos with it for closures, keeping the tone ends clean, with less intonation. It worked for me!

Erika Friczné

“The invention has a tangible impact”

I had the opportunity to try the new flute plug of Zoltán Lakat and Tamás Horváth on several occasions during its development. Based on my experience, I can definitely say that the invention has a noticeable effect on the sound of the flute. This effect depends on the material of the cork, the weight of the cork (various metals, woods, bones), the shape and depth of the cup-shaped recess in the cork, and various combinations of these parameters, affecting the efficiency of the sound production (volume), the overtone structure of the sound (timbre), the dynamic balance of high and low notes, the intonation of the different pitches, the speed of response (tone initiation). Of the many variations possible, one characteristic stands out: it makes the lowest notes sound lighter and more powerful. Otherwise the choice is determined by individual taste, style and the musical task to be performed.
